Get out on the water and learn to drive a powerboat with confidence on our RYA Youth Powerboat Level 1 & 2 course at Brighton Boating.

Designed for young people aged 12–16 years, this practical, hands-on course introduces the fundamentals of powerboating in a safe, enjoyable, and supportive environment. Delivered by qualified RYA instructors from Brighton Marina, students develop essential boat handling skills while building confidence and having fun on the water.

Course Duration

Choose the option that suits you best:

  • 4 half-day sessions, or

  • 2 full-day sessions

Both formats cover the same syllabus and lead to the same RYA certification.

What You’ll Learn

Throughout the course, participants will develop practical skills including:

  • Safety afloat and the correct use of lifejackets

  • Preparing a powerboat for use

  • Starting and stopping the engine safely

  • Basic boat handling and steering

  • Moving ahead, astern and turning

  • Coming alongside and leaving a pontoon

  • Speed control and awareness

  • Basic rules of the water and good seamanship

Students progress from the fundamentals in Level 1 to becoming competent, supervised drivers during Level 2.

Who Is It For?

This course is ideal for beginners with little or no previous boating experience. It is suitable for young people aged 12–16 years who would like to learn to drive a powerboat safely while enjoying time on the water.

How to Book

Courses can be booked directly through our website. If you’re unsure which course is right for you, our team is happy to advise.

 

Yes, availability is displayed on each experience page. If your preferred date isn’t shown, please contact us as we may still be able to accommodate you.

We recommend booking at least 8 weeks in advance, particularly for popular courses like these during the  summer season.

Levels 1 and 2 are designed for complete beginners.

Levels 3 and 4 are intended for participants who have already achieved the skills covered in Levels 1 and 2.

If you are unsure of your current level or which course is most suitable for you, please contact a member of our team, who will be happy to assist you.

Course Infomation

Your child should bring:

  • Swimwear (to wear under a wetsuit)

  • A towel and warm change of clothes

  • Old trainers or water shoes

  • Sunscreen and a hat

  • A packed lunch and refillable water bottle

All essential watersports equipment, including wetsuits and buoyancy aids, is provided.

Yes. We provide wetsuits, buoyancy aids, and all required safety equipment for every child taking part in our kids watersports courses. Our instructors are RYA-qualified and DBS-checked, ensuring a safe and supportive environment.

Kids watersports courses run in most weather conditions, as learning to handle different conditions is part of the experience. If conditions are unsafe, activities may be adapted or replaced with shore-based learning. In rare cases of cancellation, we will contact you directly.

Drop-off and collection take place at Brighton Marina (Pontoon 5, Western Concourse). Full joining instructions, including exact timings and meeting points, will be sent before the course starts.

Yes. Children are supervised at all times by our experienced instructors, both on and off the water. Instructor-to-student ratios follow RYA safety guidelines to ensure individual attention and support.

This is very common, especially for beginners. Our instructors are experienced in working with children of all confidence levels and focus on building skills gradually in a fun, encouraging environment.

Parents are welcome to remain nearby; however, for safety and focus, access to pontoons and boats is restricted to staff and participants only.
