About Course
The RYA Youth Sailing Stage 4 course is designed to enhance young sailors’ skills, enabling them to confidently crew or helm both single and double‑handed boats. Delivered on the open sea from our Brighton Marina centre, this dynamic course provides an engaging and challenging environment for developing advanced sailing techniques.

- Rigging, Motoring and mooring
- Sailing techniques at all points of sail
- Manoeuvres in crewed boats
- Recovering a man overboard
- Dealing with different situation afloat

Course Objectives
By the end of the course, sailors will be able to confidently launch and sail a boat around a triangular course in appropriate conditions. This level of competence meets the standard required for junior members to independently hire boats for sailing at sea.
Pre requirements
As a guide 12+, with RYA Youth Sailing Stage 3 and some sailing practice in between courses. Younger children that have RYA Stage 2 and have practiced may be able to attend. Please contact us. RYA Stage 4 certificates can only be issued to students that pass all elements of the course.

What to bring
- Spare set of clothes and towel just incase
- Quick drying clothes can be very practical, avoid jeans
- Gloves for warmth and rope friction protection
- Sunglasses, sunhat and suncream for summer months and woolly hats, thermals and layers for winter months
- Deck boots and non-slip deck shoes or trainers that don’t mark
- Waterproofs, we have ones to use if you do not have your own

- If you are worried or unsure whether you suffer from seasickness then pills and wrist-bands work well. Don’t arrive on an empty stomach and take tablets with breakfast if you have never been sailing on the sea before, sometimes the motion takes a while to get used to
- Snacks and drinks for a break, either on the water or onshore
- Please note that we only have limited lockers for putting valuables in, so please minimise these as much as possible

We recommend booking at least 8 weeks in advance, particularly for popular courses like these during the summer season.
Levels 1 and 2 are designed for complete beginners.
Levels 3 and 4 are intended for participants who have already achieved the skills covered in Levels 1 and 2.
If you are unsure of your current level or which course is most suitable for you, please contact a member of our team, who will be happy to assist you.
Course Infomation
Your child should bring:
Swimwear (to wear under a wetsuit)
A towel and warm change of clothes
Old trainers or water shoes

A packed lunch and refillable water bottle
All essential watersports equipment, including wetsuits and buoyancy aids, is provided.
Yes. We provide wetsuits, buoyancy aids, and all required safety equipment for every child taking part in our kids watersports courses. Our instructors are RYA-qualified and DBS-checked, ensuring a safe and supportive environment.
Kids watersports courses run in most weather conditions, as learning to handle different conditions is part of the experience. If conditions are unsafe, activities may be adapted or replaced with shore-based learning. In rare cases of cancellation, we will contact you directly.
Drop-off and collection take place at Brighton Marina (Pontoon 5, Western Concourse). Full joining instructions, including exact timings and meeting points, will be sent before the course starts.
Yes. Children are supervised at all times by our experienced instructors, both on and off the water. Instructor-to-student ratios follow RYA safety guidelines to ensure individual attention and support.
This is very common, especially for beginners. Our instructors are experienced in working with children of all confidence levels and focus on building skills gradually in a fun, encouraging environment.
Parents are welcome to remain nearby; however, for safety and focus, access to pontoons and boats is restricted to staff and participants only.
