Who is this course for

Advanced sailors from stage 4

About Course

The Performance course advances the sailors from Stage 4 and starts introducing new skills with Spinnakers and all the extra power these sails gives your boats downwind performance. In addition we will cover some seamanship skills in planning and executing a trip on the boats, taking into account the weather, tides and navigation. Then there is an introduction to racing and race starts which is a great way to improve your sailing skills.
Kids will:

  • Introduction to Spinnakers
  • Introduction to Racing
  • Seamanship skills and planning a trip

With all sailing, we are guided by the weather so you will start in the evening to prepare of the passage, look at the forecast, plan the passage and get the victualing for the trip. We would then look to sail across the channel leaving early in the morning.

Course Content

  • Setting up Spinnaker and launching techniques
  • Downwind Asymmetric Sail handling and harnessing all that power
  • Introduction to racing, race starts and mark rounding, rules
  • Planning a trip, use of charts, planning for tides and weather

We provide:

  • Full tuition from RYA qualified and DBS checked instructors
  • All equipment including waterproofs
  • Exciting coastal sailing

If the winds are not suitable alternatives would be a sail around the back of the Isle of Wight to Poole, or into the Solent.

RYA Youth Stage 4. As a guide Age 10 to 16. Younger children can complete training at Hove Lagoon

How to Book

Courses can be booked directly through our website. If you’re unsure which course is right for you, our team is happy to advise.

 

Yes, availability is displayed on each experience page. If your preferred date isn’t shown, please contact us as we may still be able to accommodate you.

We recommend booking at least 8 weeks in advance, particularly for popular courses like these during the  summer season.

Levels 1 and 2 are designed for complete beginners.

Levels 3 and 4 are intended for participants who have already achieved the skills covered in Levels 1 and 2.

If you are unsure of your current level or which course is most suitable for you, please contact a member of our team, who will be happy to assist you.

Course Infomation

Your child should bring:

  • Swimwear (to wear under a wetsuit)

  • A towel and warm change of clothes

  • Old trainers or water shoes

  • Sunscreen and a hat

  • A packed lunch and refillable water bottle

All essential watersports equipment, including wetsuits and buoyancy aids, is provided.

Yes. We provide wetsuits, buoyancy aids, and all required safety equipment for every child taking part in our kids watersports courses. Our instructors are RYA-qualified and DBS-checked, ensuring a safe and supportive environment.

Kids watersports courses run in most weather conditions, as learning to handle different conditions is part of the experience. If conditions are unsafe, activities may be adapted or replaced with shore-based learning. In rare cases of cancellation, we will contact you directly.

Drop-off and collection take place at Brighton Marina (Pontoon 5, Western Concourse). Full joining instructions, including exact timings and meeting points, will be sent before the course starts.

Yes. Children are supervised at all times by our experienced instructors, both on and off the water. Instructor-to-student ratios follow RYA safety guidelines to ensure individual attention and support.

This is very common, especially for beginners. Our instructors are experienced in working with children of all confidence levels and focus on building skills gradually in a fun, encouraging environment.

Parents are welcome to remain nearby; however, for safety and focus, access to pontoons and boats is restricted to staff and participants only.
