Learning to sail

Learn to Sail — RYA Sailing Courses in Brighton

The UK is surrounded by water and has a long sailing heritage, yet many people never have the opportunity to learn. Learning to sail is more accessible than you might think, with clear training pathways designed to take complete beginners from their first sail through to confident, independent sailing.

All recognised sailing training in the UK is overseen by the Royal Yachting Association (RYA). This means any course you choose should be delivered by an RYA-approved training centre, ensuring high safety standards and structured progression. One of the first decisions when learning to sail is whether you want to sail smaller boats (dinghy sailing) or larger yachts.

Dinghy Sailing — The Ideal Way to Start

For many beginners, dinghy sailing is the best introduction. The RYA Level 1 Start Sailing course teaches the basics, from rigging the boat and launching to understanding wind direction, balance and boat control.

Training at a coastal RYA centre is recommended if you want to sail on the sea, as this allows you to gain a Coastal Endorsement. Lagoon Watersports in Brighton offers exactly this, with years of experience teaching beginners in real coastal conditions.

After Level 1, the RYA Level 2 course builds confidence and independence. This qualification is widely recognised as the standard required to hire a dinghy at most sailing centres. From there, you can progress to advanced options such as race training, spinnaker handling and performance sailing.

Progressing to Yacht Sailing

Many sailors choose to move on to yacht sailing once they are comfortable on dinghies, opening the door to flotilla holidays, coastal cruising and chartering abroad. It’s important to note that dinghy sailing is not a requirement for yacht sailing — you can start directly with yacht courses if that suits your goals.

Sailors who have completed RYA Dinghy Level 2, particularly on a keelboat, may be able to shorten the RYA Competent Crew course and progress more quickly toward the RYA Day Skipper qualification, which allows you to charter a yacht.
